Chris Brown At BET Awards: Fortune Is My ‘Last Album’

2 Jul

Chris Brown won Best Male R&B Artist at Sunday’s 2012 BET Awards, beating out Usher and Trey Songz, and then surprisingly revealed in his acceptance speech that his next album will be his last.

"I’d like to thank Team Breezy, everybody who worked on any one of my albums," he said. "My last album that’s coming out in two days. … I just want to thank all my fans. It’s dedicated to y’all. This one’s for y’all, man, I appreciate everything," he said, blowing fans a kiss.

It’s unclear where Brown’s self-imposed early retirement is coming from, but he has often been outspoken about his rocky relationship with the media and any criticism toward him from his detractors. Perhaps his latest brush with controversy, a reported brawl with Drake’s crew at an NYC nightclub a couple of weeks ago, pushed him over the edge.

Chris will release his new album, Fortune, on Tuesday. Given his penchant for rapping, which exploded with 2011’s "Look at Me Now," if Breezy continues to make music, he could expand further into hip-hop. He shared with MTV News in late June how he views his rapping: "With the hip-hop and the rapping, it’s more of — I wouldn’t say [a] hobby — it’s just me expressing myself.

"I’m not going to sit here and say I’m the best rapper or I’m a rapper," he added with a big smile. "I’m just saying I could do it, I guess, if y’all like it."

Just Saturday, Brown released a rap over Chief Keef’s "I Don’t Like" beat, in which he took open shots at rapper Drake. Brown’s remix features several shots at Drake, his music, appearance and reputation, with lyrics like this: "One on one, what you scared, bruh?/ Them eyebrows, man, them sh–s is yikes!" and "OVO, you overdose, YOLO no, I live twice!" But Chris does commend Drake’s Young Money counterparts, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj.
