Chris Brown Performs Energetic BET Awards Set After Big Wins

2 Jul

Chris Brown‘s personal life tends to overshadow his professional accomplishments sometimes, but it would be difficult to deny that the 23-year-old is currently on a career upswing. During Sunday night’s BET Awards Brown gave an electrifying performance after picking up the trophy for Best Male R&B Artist.

With his fifth album, Fortune, dropping on July 3, the singer, dancer and sometimes-rapper had plenty to celebrate, leaving his current beef with Drake at the door for the night. He took the stage at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium delivering an energetic set that included performances of "Turn Up the Music" and "Don’t Wake Me Up."

As to be expected from a Chris Brown performance these days, there were plenty of neon strobe lights, backup dancers and thumping music set to the backdrop of a large pyramid. Shirtless and covered in metallic body paint, Breezy gave the set his all, making it fitting that he also went home with a trophy for Entertainer of the Year.

When he took the stage earlier in the night to accept his award for Best Male R&B Artist (over Usher and Trey Songz), Brown shocked fans a little by referring to Fortune as his "last album," but it was simply a bad choice of words. "I’d like to thank Team Breezy, everybody who worked on any one of my albums," he said. "My last album that’s coming out in two days. … I just want to thank all my fans. It’s dedicated to y’all. This one’s for y’all, man, I appreciate everything." Brown only meant that Fortune was the last album he’d recorded.

Over the weekend Chris Brown released a freestyle over the beat of Chief Keef’s "I Don’t Like" single, taking a few shots at his nemesis Drake. The two rappers began making headlines last month when their entourages got into a brawl at a New York City nightclub.
